Team building, especially in the work place situation, is all about encouraging your team to bond. In some ways, it's about getting them to form a cohesive unit that can then work better through better communication and people skills. Team building has really taken off over the last 10 years or so. This is simply because the effects on the workforce as well as the results are a positive for any business taking part. In other words, the results speak for themselves.
Organising a team building exercise needn't involve exotic trips or dangerous activities. The idea that a good team building needs to have players shooting at each other playing paintball, or jumping off mountaintops into freezing rivers is now thoroughly passé. You can enjoy a great team building adventure in the very office where all the staff work every day. It just takes some planning and a eye on the team building game execution. Also, it's not necessary to have games lasting for hours. Even quick games lasting 10 - 15 minutes have there place within the team building space. Let's have a look at some quick team building ideas that you could play today.
This is a great way to get your teams energised. In a game very similar to rock, paper, scissors, each player must choose a pose. keep in mind that bears eat ninjas, ninjas beat up cowboys, and cowboys shoot bears. Players from off into pairs. Each pai stands back to back. They then think about the pose they're going to strike. On the count of three the players take three steps away from each other, spin a round and strike their pose.
This is a great way of building communication skills. The game starts with everyone standing in a tight circle with their shoulders touching. Each person should then reach out their right arm and grab someone opposite with their hand. Do the same with the other arm. Now start the clock and have the group untangle themselves without letting go within a set time limit..
This is about learning to communicate in new ways. The teams stands in a straight line, side by side. hey then have to get into line based on their birthdays, but without verbal communication. This means that they have no other option than to use creative means of communication.
For this you'l be needing a small object that can be thrown/tossed. For example, a small bean bag, a small stuffed toy or a rubber ball. Everyone sits or stands in a circle. Every time the object is caught y a team member then they must share a random fact about themselves. They then must toss the object to a new player. This is a great way of breaking down barriers like shyness.
or this we need everyone t form two facing lines. One person should be facing another. Have one line turn away and then change at least 5 things about their appearance. It could be an untied shoelace to parting the hair on the other side to removing a watch. It's important that these changes are visible. After 1 minute, the other line turns back around and they have to find the changes within a certain time limit. Then switch to the other team/side.
Have the group from into pairs. Give each pair 5 minutes to develop 3 types of stretches. These must allow the pair to remain connected during the stretch itself, and they need to vocalise a sound effect with each stretch. After planing for 5 minutes, each pair goes in turn to show off their routine. This is a silly exercise that will certainly break down any barriers and hae everyone rolling around with mirth. A great all round ice breaker.
