Online escape rooms are becoming more and more popular and since we tried multiple rooms in the last few weeks, we thought we’d share our experience about the gameplay so that you don’t have to go in blind. Let’s take a look at the most basic tips and tricks.
Online escape rooms are really not that different from tradition escape games, they just take advantage of the possibilities inherent in the technique—and there is not one thing that doesn’t get better with some additional technology. For example, you can play from home and with your friends even if you are thousands of miles apart.
But just like in the case of any other invention, there are some things worth paying attention to in order to successfully overcome what the rooms throw at you.
Online escape rooms give you the opportunity to try the new generation of escape games without leaving the comfort of your home. Players join a game hosted by the game master online and find themselves in the selected real-life room.
The game master in the escape room will be the eyes, ears and hands of the players, following their instructions. Through a webcam, players can see exactly what the game master does.
Beyond these small differences in the foundation, online escape rooms are quite similar to traditional escape rooms. Players should look for clues and puzzles the same way and discover the connections between them.
The main difference between the two forms is in communication, so our first handful of good advice applies to this.
The first thing you will need is a sufficiently fast internet so that the chat does not lag. Don’t overcomplicate things, if your preferred chat program runs well, then you won’t have any problems with the online game either.
Similarly to online video conferences, headsets are a must for online escape rooms to eliminate echo. Also try not to cut each other off and talk over each other. As we all know, communication is key and the more steps you take to make it smoother, the easier it will be to escape the room.
Regarding communication with the game master, it’s worth striving to give accurate, but at the same time, general commands. For example: Look around the room! Try every key in the lock! Open all drawers... etc. Obviously, try to stay within reasonable commands and do not ask them to try 1000 different combinations on a combination lock.
