Aching Time of Pi escape room

Born into a poor family, Mr. L. was trained as a carpenter, but in 1723 he committed theft and burglary, hardly completing more than one year of his training. He was arrested and imprisoned five times in 1724, but managed to escape from prison four times, which made him a notorious public figure and made him very popular with the poorer classes. Mr L. escaped within 45 minutes by breaking through the wooden ceiling and settling on the floor with a rope made of bed linen. How did he actually manage this?
